DESIGN PROCESS
Furniture should be created to last.
And the patience spent on the composition and construction of a piece needs to mirror that. The symbiosis of design and craftsmanship sustains a constant evolution and so does our process, but this is how we generally craft.
Wood is a material that is constantly shifting. It breathes, expands and moves with the seasons. Instead of trying to tame it within the confines of a frame and facing its wrath, we have learnt to set it free, to move about as it desires.
We carefully select the finest grained wood and our craftsmen patiently imbue in the wood a gravity that only the most skilled hands can bring.
Our woodworker refines raw wood, weighs upon the wood grain, makes climatic judgements, and continually responds to questions of balance, proportion and scale. He waits, observes, carefully measures, coalesces and refines. Similarly, our craftsmen and upholsterers silently weave beauty into rough wooden forms, creating a symphony between colour and comfort.
This is why we like to think of craft as alchemy, and our craftsmen, the alchemists.
Finally, our seating is based on studying the human anatomy, putting great emphasis on posture and ergonomics. All our seating is designed for comfort, some for lounging, some to sit in for long hours of work, while some to enjoy a nice tea. Some are designed for engaging conversations while others offer a quiet retreat. We are all built differently and sit differently; it is then a question of finding what suits you the most.
